'UK construction weakest in four years'

The UK's construction sector recorded its weakest performance in four years in the July-to-September quarter, official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have shown.

The slow down has come about largely through falls in repair and maintenance work (down 3.6%) which was not enough to offset the slight rise in new work (up 0.3%).

Further reports of profit warnings have also emerged from companies in the sector over recent days. This is reportedly due to a softening of demand combined with increased competition.
