Helping a national engineering services provider improve productivity from contracted-out services

The challenge

The client is a provider of construction and government infrastructure support services. They offer a wide range of services for large government contracts.

They identified that they were losing significant hours of productivity from contracted-out services – some 5,605 hours over a six month period – and turned to Unipart to address this problem.

How we helped

Unipart provided training and development in the following areas, based on a 90 day pilot project:

  • Introduction of the Unipart Way of working in to the client organisation. Key personnel and contractors were trained in key tools that would improve the identification, analysis and solving of problems.
  • Improving co-ordination – The team identified that materials and provisions were being assigned to incorrect areas of the business, creating further issues across the workstream.
  • Developing understanding of the end-to-end process and key linkages would assist visualisation of the clients issues and an understanding of where and how the client could influence real change.
  • We helped to identify the outside influences which had caused issues in the past and still had the potential to cause future problems.

The results

During the pilot activity and through the improvements that we were able to identify, the following benefits were realised:

  • The client saw EHS reportable incidents reduced to zero during the pilot
  • There was a 13% increase in productivity from the three Mechanical and Electrical Engineering teams. 
  • Operational Managers were trained to problem solve and employ Communication Cells.
  • Seven Continuous Improvement Champions were trained to ensure that a sustainable approach would continue after the 90-day pilot activity had been completed.
