Improving depot efficiency for Field Operations

The challenge

The whole process to repair and refurbish pre heaters for gas distribution in this regional ‘operate and maintain’ workshop was inefficient. The workshop was also poorly laid out, resulting in a lot of wasted time.

How we helped

Our expert practitioners supported the team in designing new, more efficient processes and the layout of the workshop.

We built their capability in efficient ways of working and in creative problem solving, which is allowing the team to continue to review performance, identify further problems and solve them at their own level.

The results
  • The redesigned processes and new layout increased capacity by around 30%, a saving £240K p.a.
  • With the solution being rolled out across the 65 sites in the network, a total saving of £15.6million p.a. is expected
  • The greater efficiency of the operation and team involvement in daily performance has led to a significant improvement in service to their internal customers
  • These new skills are leading to much greater employee engagement, with the team actively involved in daily communication meetings to review and improve the performance of their service.
